History
Before Bell County's establishment, Native American tribes, including the Tonkawa, Apache, and Comanche, inhabited the region. The first Anglo-American settlers, primarily farmers and ranchers, arrived in the early 19th century. In 1850, Bell County was officially formed after separating from Milam County. The county was named after Peter Hansborough Bell, the third governor of Texas. Agriculture and ranching became the county’s economic backbone, but railroads, introduced in the late 19th century, helped fuel growth by increasing trade and attracting new residents. Like much of Texas, Bell County suffered during the Civil War, with economic struggles affecting many residents. After the war, Reconstruction brought a slow recovery, as railroad expansion and cattle ranching helped rebuild the economy. In the late 19th century, Belton emerged as a regional trade center, and the construction of cotton gins and flour mills supported local industries. However, like much of the country, Bell County faced challenges during the Great Depression, with falling crop prices and economic instability affecting farmers and small businesses. The county’s biggest economic shift came in 1942, when the U.S. Army established Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos) as a training facility during World War II. The fort brought jobs, infrastructure, and population growth, becoming a critical driver of the county’s long-term prosperity. Today, Bell County has evolved into a regional hub for manufacturing, healthcare, and education, while still maintaining its military ties.
