History
Coryell County has a rich history that dates back over 10,000 years, beginning with Paleo-Indians who first inhabited the region. Few people lived in the area until the 1840s when the U.S. government built forts to protect settlers from Native American raids. In 1854, Coryell County was officially formed from parts of Bell and McLennan Counties. The late 19th century saw economic growth with the arrival of the railroad, which connected Coryell County to new markets. Businesses such as general stores, banks, and cotton gins emerged to support the growing agricultural economy. World War II marked a turning point for Coryell County. The establishment of Fort Hood in 1942 immediately increased the population and stimulated economic growth. The fort remains one of the county’s largest employers, providing jobs and boosting industries such as construction, retail, and public services.
