Discover Gonzales County
Heart of Texas Independence
Gonzales County, a treasure nestled within the heart of Texas, holds a special place in my heart. It's not just the scenic beauty or its tranquil pace of life that endears it me to, but the deep sense of history and defiance that permeates its very air. This county, with its rolling landscapes and whispering rivers at the confluence of the Guadalupe and San Marcos, stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of Texas Independence.
The story of the "Come and Take It" cannon encapsulates the essence of Gonzales County. In 1835, when Mexican troops demanded the return of a cannon they had loaned, the colonists' response was a flag bearing the defiant message "Come and Take It." This act of resistance is more than a historic event; it's a yearly celebration that brings the community together, reminding us of our roots in resilience and defiance. The "Come and Take It" festival is a vibrant affair that fills the streets of Gonzales with a spirit of unity and pride, drawing visitors from near and far to partake in the commemoration of our audacious heritage.
History
Gonzales County has a rich history that dates back thousands of years to the Paleo-Indians. Before European settlement, the Tonkawa, Karankawa, and Comanche tribes inhabited the area. In 1825, the Mexican government granted Green DeWitt permission to bring 400 families to establish a colony. At the time, Gonzales was the westernmost European settlement, leading to frequent conflicts with Native American tribes. The county played a pivotal role in the Texas Revolution. The Battle of Gonzales, known as the first battle of the revolution, occurred when Texan settlers successfully repelled Mexican troops. Later, as Santa Anna's forces advanced, the residents of Gonzales burned their town rather than let it fall into enemy hands. After Texas won its independence, settlers returned to rebuild and reestablish their community. Like much of the South, Gonzales County suffered economically during the Civil War and Reconstruction. Union blockades disrupted the export of cotton, and the region struggled to recover in the aftermath of the war. The railroad's arrival helped the county escape its post-war slump, fueling economic growth and revitalizing its towns. The county's diverse agricultural economy also helped it weather the Great Depression better than many other areas. After World War II, the population declined steadily until 1970. Today, Gonzales County remains primarily agricultural, though the oil and gas industry continues to expand.
Recreation
Gonzales County offers a variety of activities for residents and visitors alike. Palmetto State Park, located along the San Marcos River, features unique terrain and diverse wildlife, making it a popular destination for hiking, fishing, and camping. The Gonzales Memorial Museum highlights the county’s significant role in the Texas Revolution and displays the famous "Come and Take It" cannon, which symbolized Texan defiance against Mexican rule. The Come and Take It Festival, an annual event, celebrates the Battle of Gonzales with a parade, live music, and community festivities.
Industry
Gonzales County's economy is driven by agriculture, energy production, and manufacturing. Cattle ranching, poultry farming, and the production of cotton, corn, and hay dominate the agricultural sector. The oil and gas industry has grown significantly, providing jobs and contributing to local revenue. Small-scale manufacturing also plays a vital role in the economy, producing agricultural equipment, building materials, and other essential goods.
