Discover Mills County
The Heart of Rural Texas Living
Nestled in the heart of Texas, Mills County is a treasure waiting to be discovered. With its blend of rural charm and a tight-knit community spirit, it's a place that quickly feels like home. From the rolling landscapes to the friendly nods of neighbors, Mills County embodies the essence of Southern hospitality and the tranquil pace of country living.
The first thing that captures the heart in Mills County is the natural beauty that surrounds it. The county, with its picturesque settings, offers a serene backdrop to everyday life. Whether it's the lush greenery of Goldthwaite City Park, the rugged allure of the Sisco D Hunting Ranch, or the educational and inspirational atmosphere of Legacy Plaza, there's a deep connection to nature here that is both grounding and uplifting.
History
Mills County was originally inhabited by the Apache and Comanche tribes, who frequently clashed with early settlers attempting to establish communities in the area. The rugged terrain and ongoing conflicts delayed significant settlement until the late 19th century. Mills County contributed little to the Civil War, as many settlers remained home to protect their land from Native American raids and outlaws. The arrival of the railroad in 1885 spurred economic growth, leading to the county's official establishment in 1887. The county quickly became an agricultural hub, with livestock ranching and crop farming forming the foundation of the local economy. However, the Great Depression severely impacted Mills County, causing widespread economic hardship and prompting a steady population decline that lasted until the 1970s. During this time, advancements in farming technology reduced the need for labor, further contributing to the population decline. The county experienced a modest economic rebound in the latter half of the 20th century with the emergence of a small manufacturing sector and renewable energy projects. Despite these changes, Mills County remains a rural community with a population of approximately 4,500 residents, maintaining its strong agricultural roots while adapting to modern economic shifts.
Recreation
Mills County offers a variety of recreational activities despite its small size. History enthusiasts can visit the Mills County Historical Museum, housed in a beautifully restored 1893 building, which showcases the county's rich heritage. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Goldthwaite Municipal Golf Course provides a scenic nine-hole course open year-round. The county's open spaces and ranchland also make it a prime destination for hunting, particularly for whitetail deer.
Industry
The Mills County economy has remained largely unchanged since its founding, with agriculture continuing to be the dominant industry. The county generates approximately $28 million annually from agriculture, with livestock production accounting for 90% of that revenue. In recent years, renewable energy has emerged as a growing sector, with multiple wind energy projects producing an estimated 846 megawatts of power. Additionally, a small manufacturing industry supports the local economy, primarily focusing on the production of farm equipment and related agricultural machinery.
