History
The Comanche and Tonkawa tribes originally inhabited Erath County. Settlement remained slow due to conflicts with the Comanche, but in 1854, a group of settlers moved to the area, and by 1856, Texas officially established Erath County. As Native American raids declined, the county experienced significant growth. Cattle ranching and agriculture became the backbone of the local economy, and the arrival of the railroad in the 1880s helped connect Erath County to broader markets. During the 20th century, the county diversified its agricultural production and became one of the leading dairy-producing regions in Texas. World War II further boosted Erath County’s economy as the demand for agricultural products increased. After the war, Tarleton State University expanded, playing a major role in the county’s development. Today, Erath County remains primarily rural, with agriculture and education continuing to shape its economy.
Recreation
Erath County offers a variety of recreational opportunities that reflect its deep-rooted cowboy culture and small-town charm. Known as the "Cowboy Capital of the World," Stephenville hosts the annual PRCA Rodeo, where top rodeo competitors from across the country compete to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo. The Stephenville Historical House Museum highlights the county's pioneer history through restored historic buildings and exhibits that depict early settler life. The Dublin Rodeo Heritage Museum celebrates Erath County’s rich rodeo legacy, featuring exhibits on rodeo legends who have come from the area.
Industry
Erath County has a diverse economy that remains deeply connected to agriculture and ranching. The county is one of the largest dairy-producing regions in Texas, with dairy farming serving as a major economic driver. Cattle, grains, and peanuts are also key agricultural products. Small-scale manufacturing, including agricultural equipment and building materials, contributes to the local economy. Tarleton State University plays a crucial role in employment and economic growth, supporting small businesses and driving investment in the community.
