History

Hays County has a long and diverse history dating back over 8,000 years to the Paleo-Indians, the region’s earliest known inhabitants. Their descendants, including the Tonkawa and Comanche tribes, later occupied the area. In 1807, around 80 settlers attempted to establish a community, but frequent flooding and attacks from the Comanche and Tonkawa forced them to abandon the settlement. More settlers arrived after Texas gained independence from Mexico, and in 1848, the state legislature officially formed Hays County from parts of Travis County. Agriculture initially drove the county’s economy, with cattle, cotton, and corn as the primary products. However, Hays County struggled during the Civil War and Reconstruction. The arrival of the International-Great Northern Railroad in 1880 helped the county recover by connecting it to larger markets. The establishment of Texas State University at the end of the 19th century further strengthened the local economy by creating jobs and attracting residents. For the next 50 years, the population and economy remained relatively stable until the opening of the Gary Job Corps Training Center, which significantly boosted growth. Today, Hays County is a key part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area and continues to experience rapid development.

Manufacturing plays a crucial role as well, with industrial centers in Kyle and Buda producing electronics, machinery, and food products. Education remains a cornerstone of the local economy, with Texas State University employing thousands of people while its student population fuels local businesses and services.
