As a resident, I've found that McLennan County strikes a wonderful balance between the past and the present. Established in 1850 and named after one of its early settlers, Neil McLennan, the county has a storied past that is still palpable today. Waco, the county seat, serves as the cultural and economic hub, embodying the community spirit and vibrancy that define this area.
History
Archeological evidence suggests that McLennan County has been inhabited for at least 11,000 years, with Paleo-Indians being the earliest known occupants. In more recent history, the Tonkawa, Wichita, and Caddo tribes lived in the region. Native American raids deterred settlement until Waco Village was established in 1849. A year later, in 1850, McLennan County was officially formed. As the frontier pushed further west, the county experienced rapid growth, attracting well-educated settlers who invested in building towns, churches, and schools. In 1886, Baylor University was founded, eventually becoming one of Texas's most prestigious higher education institutions. Like much of Texas, McLennan County suffered economic hardship during and after the Civil War. However, in the 1870s, improved transportation and an influx of immigrants helped Waco develop into a regional trade hub. Railroads played a crucial role in boosting the county's cotton industry, which fueled economic growth for decades. During World War I, Waco saw a rise in military installations, drawing more people into urban areas. The Great Depression temporarily stalled progress, but World War II revitalized the economy, spurring industrial growth and diversifying the county’s economic base. Today, McLennan County continues to thrive with a well-balanced economy and remains one of the larger counties in Texas.

The county is home to unique historical attractions, such as the Dr Pepper Museum and the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, both located in beautifully preserved historic buildings.
