History
Navarro County was originally home to the Kickapoo and Comanche tribes. In 1834, Thomas J. Chambers received the first land grant for the area, but settlement was slow due to the constant threat of Native American attacks. By 1839, more families began arriving, establishing small communities around a trading post founded by George Washington Hill. As the population grew, citizens petitioned for a new county, and in 1846, Navarro County was officially established. During the Civil War, Navarro County strongly supported the Confederacy, establishing training camps and sending men to fight as far away as Virginia. The post-war Reconstruction period was challenging, but the county rebounded with the arrival of the railroad, which significantly boosted the economy. The early 20th century brought prosperity with the discovery of oil, alongside the already-thriving agricultural industry. However, mid-century trends led to a decline, with the number of farms, livestock production, crop yields, and the overall population decreasing until the 1970s. Beginning in the 1970s, the county experienced a resurgence, with industries such as construction, manufacturing, energy, and agriculture all expanding. Today, Navarro County continues to maintain a diverse economy that supports various industries and fosters steady growth.
