History
The first inhabitants of Somervell County were Native American tribes, primarily the Caddo and Tonkawa, though the Comanche and Apache also frequented the area. The first Anglo settlers arrived in the late 1840s when the Barnard family established an Indian trading post. Shortly after, they built Barnard's Mill at what would later become Glen Rose, which served as the county's central hub of activity. In 1875, Somervell County was officially formed from parts of Hood and Bosque counties. For much of its early history, the county remained predominantly rural, with agriculture serving as its economic backbone. The Great Depression brought significant hardship to the region, leading to high unemployment and a decline in agricultural production. The county struggled economically for decades until the 1970s, when the construction of the Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant dramatically transformed the area. The plant's development spurred population growth, raised wages, and increased land values. Today, the power plant remains the cornerstone of Somervell County's economy, though the region has diversified into other industries.
Recreation
Despite being one of the smallest counties in Texas, Somervell County offers a variety of attractions. Dinosaur Valley State Park is the county’s most famous destination, featuring well-preserved dinosaur tracks along the Paluxy River and scenic hiking trails. Barnard's Mill and Art Museum, originally built in 1860, now serves as an art and history museum, appealing to both history enthusiasts and art lovers. Another unique attraction is Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, where visitors can embark on a self-guided safari to see exotic animals up close.
Industry
Somervell County's economy is largely driven by the Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant. The utilities sector is the largest industry, as the power plant provides hundreds of jobs and generates substantial revenue for the county. Construction also plays a vital role in supporting local infrastructure and regional development. Additionally, healthcare has become an essential industry, providing employment opportunities and ensuring the well-being of the community.
