History
Archeological evidence suggests human habitation in Williamson County dates back at least 4500 B.C. More recently, the Tonkawa and Comanche tribes thrived in the region before Anglo-American settlers arrived. The county was officially formed in 1848 and named after Robert M. Williamson, a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto and an early Texas leader. Georgetown, the county seat, is home to Southwestern University, the oldest university in Texas, founded in 1840. The International-Great Northern Railroad helped drive economic growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, facilitating the transportation of cotton and other goods. As Austin and its suburbs expanded in the late 20th century, Williamson County transformed from a predominantly agricultural region into a thriving urban area with a diverse economy.
